Jyoti Mirdha Biography, Career

Jyoti Mirdha is a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) who is in the 15th Lok Sabha representing Nagaur. She won the seat by a margin of 1.55 million votes in 2009. She has had a significant impact on several issues as a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare, including generic drugs, bringing more drugs under the price control regime, pharmaceutical companies’ low expenditure on research and development, organ donation legislation, and the HPV vaccine. Mirdha has advocated for tighter price controls on pharmaceutical retail prices, stating that “ideally, all 900 or so molecules currently being marketed should be brought under price control, as partial control will not be effective because manufacturers freely migrate from price-controlled drugs to those outside price control.”

Mirdha also expressed concern in 2010 that pharmaceutical companies were bribing doctors with gifts and holidays. She informed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that pharmaceutical companies had paid up to 11 physicians and 30 of their family members for summer holidays in areas such as England and Scotland. In her letter, she identified a gap in a regulation intended to prohibit physicians from accepting favors from pharmaceutical companies, which did not prevent the companies from delivering these presents.
