In 1964, while still in high school, he began performing on weekends as Johnny Farnham with the neighborhood band The Mavericks. The band performed five songs in total.

Late in 1965, he accepted an invitation to join the string-only band Strings Unlimited, which played regularly at a local hotel.

After winning the state finals of the Hoadley’s Battle of the Sounds, they produced a three-track demo with Farnham on vocals, Stewart Male on lead guitar, Barry Roy on rhythm guitar, Mike Foenander on keyboards, Joe Cincotta on bass, and Peter Foggie on drums in 1966.
