Hurley was the head coach at St. Benedict Preparatory School in New Jersey, and he is credited with transforming the school into one of America’s top high school basketball programs. He was the head coach at Wagner College for two years, setting the school’s single-season win-loss record of 25-6 in 2011-2012. He then served as head coach at the University of Rhode Island for six years, leading the club to the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and 2018 for the first time since 1999. Hurley declined a long-term offer from Rhode Island to head the University of Connecticut Huskies. Hurley during the 2023 NCAA Final Four farewell ceremony. From 2010 to 2013, his brother Bobby was one of his assistant coaches at Rhode Island and Wagner.
